Isn’t it every tourist’s dream to be able to travel and explore for free?

In an effort to encourage domestic tourism, the government has initiated the ‘Dekho Apna Desh’ campaign. As it goes, under the ‘Paryatan Parv’ initiative, the government will reward those travelling to at least 15 popular Indian tourist destinations within a year’s span. By 2022, not only will they be rewarded for completing the task, but also be honored as brand ambassadors of Indian Tourism.

The announcement of this campaign has stirred up excitement amongst passionate travelers. You get to check off destinations from your bucket list while the government pays for it; can it get any better? Although Union Tourism Minister Prahlad Singh Patel clarified that this should be thought as more of an incentive than monetary benefit, just imagine the boost Indian tourism is expected to receive from this initiative.

It’s quite simple. If you wish your travels within India to be funded, just take a pledge on the website - pledge.mygov.in, visit 15 destinations in the country in a year and submit the photos on the department’s website. The tourists must ensure they travel outside their home states as well, to a well–curated list of 'iconic sites' to stand eligible for the incentive.

While abroad trips are enticing, there are so many untapped and unexplored vistas in India that are at par with international sightseeing options. Some of the iconic places that have been identified by the Ministry of Tourism include Taj Mahal and Fatehpur Sikri (Uttar Pradesh), Ajanta and Ellora (Maharashtra), Red Fort and Qutub Minar (Delhi), Colva (Goa), Amer Fort (Rajasthan), Dholavira (Gujarat) and Khajuraho (Madhya Pradesh). The Sun Temple at Konark is soon to be added to the list of ‘iconic places’ to visit under the ‘Dekho Apna Desh’ campaign.

The destinations span a range of interests; right from the off-the- beaten-path-spots for nature lovers to sun-washed beaches, even beautiful wildlife sanctuaries, and enchanting historic monuments for those who like walk down our rich past. All you need to do is begin, take the pledge and set off on a journey to discover the beauty and intrigue in India.

Travelling has never been more fun and now it’s all funded too!  So why wait? Let’s #CollectStories of India’s art, culture and heritage together!
